For her first feature film, The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola commissioned British fashion photographer Corinne Day to accompany her on the set. Known for her raw, unembellished photographs of iconic 90s models, Day's portrayal of feminine beauty found its match in Coppola, whose debut marked the beginning of her sincere and empathetic depictions of femininity.
Edited from Day's original negatives, this volume—released to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of The Virgin Suicides—offers a hypnotic and unprecedented look at Coppola's enigmatic set design about the Lisbon sisters and their suburban world.
In Day's photographs, the exuberant mystery of Coppola's set is manifested in images of the young actors working and between takes, with spontaneous poses and thoughtful expressions that reflect the intimate and collaborative atmosphere of the shoot. Fragments of costume and set design appear suggestively—crucifixes, pink lace bras, party dresses, beauty products, and candy apples—all key elements in Coppola's portrayal of adolescent longing and repression.
Completed with new texts by Sofia Coppola and Jeffrey Eugenides, this volume opens a fascinating dialogue between Eugenides's original text and Coppola's cult adaptation.
