This facsimile reproduction presents the only known notebook of artist Anni Albers, providing insight into her working method.
Between 1970 and 1980, Albers filled this grid paper notebook with drawings and studies documenting her creative process. It contains detailed schematics of her graphic work, as well as studies for her later knot drawings. The notebook shows Albers' development as a draftswoman, describing how she constructed complex patterns through detailed analysis, piece by piece and line by line, in a series of geometric compositions.
An afterword written by Brenda Danilowitz, chief curator of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, contextualizes the notebook and discusses the function of these studies in the evolution of her work.
