Photographic vignette by Yorgos Lanthimos. Although it was taken on the set of Poor Things in Budapest, this photographic work transcends time and space, creating a universe of its own, independent of the film's context.
The images alternate between black and white and color, creating an atmosphere that fluctuates between the past and present. As they unfold, the photographs reveal overlapping layers of reality and fiction. Although the film is set in different cities of the 19th-century cities—such as London, Lisbon, Marseille, and an ocean liner—all these locations were recreated in Budapest studios. These urban sets and scenographic interiors serve as stages for the photographs, inhabited by characters who seem to wander through imaginary cities.
In many of the shots, the elements of the filming— screens, scaffolding, structures, lighting, and technical equipment— are visible in the margins, revealing the artifice behind the visual construction. Lanthimos deliberately expands the frame to show these mechanisms, thus creating a parallel narrative: a story within a story.
The publication, designed with fold-out pages, reinforces this idea by inviting the reader to discover the hidden worlds between the characters, as if opening a book within another.
