This intimate and revealing volume brings together the extraordinary illustrated letters of the young Lucian Freud, offering fresh insight into his personality and creative process. Full of visual and verbal wit, as well as affection and irreverence, these letters — many of which feature unique drawings and graphic details — finally allow readers to hear the artist's voice directly.

Compiled with the support of the Freud estate, the letters come from public archives and private collections, including those of the Freud Museum, the National Portrait Gallery and the Tate. Together, they paint a complex portrait of his early years, from his school notes to his establishment as an artist.

Featuring contributions from David Dawson, the painter's personal assistant and director of the Freud Archive, as well as Martin Gayford, a critic and friend of the artist, this book intertwines correspondence and early works to create a narrative that spans the artist's beginnings, first marriage and artistic evolution.
