This facsimile reproduction presents the only known notebook of the artist Anni Albers, providing information on her working method.
Between 1970 and 1980, Albers filled this grid paper notebook with drawings and studies documenting her creative process. It contains detailed sketches of her graphic work, as well as studies for her late knot drawings. The notebook shows the development of Albers as a draftswoman, describing how she built complex patterns through detailed analysis, piece by piece and line-by-line, in a series of geometric compositions.
An afterword written by Brenda Danilowitz, Chief Curator of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, contextualises the notebook and looks at the role of these studies in the evolution of her work.
